Nigeria is known to produce the most students, among African countries, who fly to the US to pursue their higher education. By 2019, there were more than 15,000 Nigerian nationals who pursued their higher education in the US. Amidst all the problems happening due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these international students coming from Nigeria can rest easy. The US Mission has made it a priority to ensure that student visa applications increase to help students continue their studies in the US.
US Mission Country Consular Coordinator Susan Tuller said, “As we continue to prioritize the health and safety of our staff and customers, processing student visas remains a high priority for the US Mission in Nigeria.” She also mentioned that to avoid getting issues with their visa application, they must process them on the US travel docs website.
Tuller warned that interested students must avoid having fixers process their visa applications. She has encouraged students to check EducationUSA Advising Centers. These centers can help students in their goal to study in US colleges. To avoid fraud, it is best to research well about an institution, as well as the guidelines in getting a student visa.
Students from Nigeria can apply for an F-1 Student Visa by creating an online account on the US Department of State website. The Form DS 160 should be completed and printed. After paying the fee, an online appointment will be done at the embassy in Nigeria to submit biometrics and attend the scheduled interview.
