UC Campuses to Trim Int’l Student Applications in 2022

Key Takeaways:

  • UC campuses aim to make room for local students by reducing international student intake beginning fall 2022
  • UC system provided a proposal for every international student to have WHO-approved vaccines upon coming to the country

University of California’s three campuses, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego, aim to make room for approximately 4,500 California students by reducing international student intake by 7% beginning fall 2022.

With a state-funded budget to deal with the anticipated revenue loss, the UC system wants to admit 6,230 more local students in 2022 at the cost of 900 international students they accept annually.

According to UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, the enrollment of international students was to help in balancing the tuition costs for California students. International student intake has provided revenue for the UC system that enabled them to improve their program offerings for students.

Now that the UC system is compelled to lessen the acceptance of international students, Khosla maintained that international students are “enrolled only in addition to qualified California students, not in place of them.”

While reducing the number of international students inflicts lower revenue, California is still set to fund the admission of more local freshmen. The budget plan includes US$180 million to cover the UC and Cal State enrollment expansion, US$154 million for 133,000 community college students in fall 2021, and a US$2 billion fund will be created exclusively for student housing.

However, UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ stated that trimming down the international student intake has caused budget gaps and that the current state allocation does not cover the actual cost of instruction.

Despite a potential trim in international student acceptance, interests are still at high. In response, the UC system has proposed that every student coming from overseas have to receive a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization which includes Pfizer/BioNTech, Astrazeneca-SK Bio, Serum Institute of India, Janssen, Moderna, and Sinopharm.
