Canada is a top destination for international students. Their outstanding approach to global education and high standard of life is recognized in the world.

If you want to become a Registered Nurse, you’ll find plenty of opportunities in Canada. A degree in Nursing in the country can guarantee a job placement immediately after graduation.

If you want to study in Canada, here’s a short guide to help you get started:

Why Choose Canada?

Canada’s robust healthcare system is powered by professionals in the medical field. This makes Canada a popular choice for health-related degrees including Nursing.

The Canadian healthcare system has a high demand for Nursing graduates. Job openings in the industry are expected to grow from 64,000 in 2019 to 142,000 in 2035.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging at present, the Canadian government has put forth initiatives to battle the disease. This includes high dependence on nurses, thus the rise of opportunities for Nursing graduates.

You can also immediately get work experience through the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). After earning your Nursing degree, you can apply for a PGWP to remain in Canada for employment. With valuable Canadian work experience, you can be eligible for pathways to permanent residency in the country.

Common Core Courses and Subjects

Foreign students can earn a BSc in Nursing through two streams: Basic Stream and Accelerated Stream.

The Basic Stream is for students with no prior nursing education. The Accelerated Stream is for students who completed two years in university. Within those two years, the student must have taken compulsory subjects such as Physiology and Human Anatomy.

Other common courses for Nursing include Nursing Theory, Nursing Practice, Path Physiology, and Psychology. Some nursing schools may require different sets of courses and practical work.

General Admission Requirements

The language of instruction in Canada is English. International students are required to take an English Language Proficiency test such as the IELTS, TOEFL, and CAEL.

Score requirements in each test vary depending on the university. But generally, you need to score at least the minimum level of proficiency.

Your high school certificate is also a requirement. But you must have completed high school with concentrations in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Once you’ve selected your Canadian university, you’ll receive a letter of acceptance. You need to present this letter when applying for a study permit.

You can apply for a study permit through the Student Direct Stream if you’re from the Philippines, India, China, Vietnam, Morocco, Senegal, or Pakistan.
