Studying in Malaysia: How Much Does It Really Cost?

International education in Malaysia gives students a unique experience that one cannot usually get in other top study destinations around the world. Malaysia, which offers an environment that is a blend of tradition and innovation, is also home to hospitable and friendly people. In addition, it is one of the safest countries in the world. It is even safer than the Netherlands, Poland, Taiwan, and Spain.

The country, which is located in southeast Asia, is poised to be a top international study destination in the coming years. Though not yet as popular as other countries in Europe, Malaysia is starting to catch up. In fact, 21 of its institutions have ranked in the latest QS World University Rankings, 8 in the 2021 Times Higher Education World Rankings, and 5 in the 2020 Shanghai Rankings.

Aside from its beauty and the opportunities it offers to international students worldwide, Malaysia is also an affordable option to study and live in. If you are planning to study in Malaysia, it is important to know how much it would cost, including tuition fees and expenses, to prepare financially.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees in Malaysia may vary depending on the institution, program, location, and program level. Relatively, they cost less compared to other international study destinations such as the UK and the US. Moreover, public and private institutions’ tuition fee costs may not differ that much.

Undergraduate tuition fees may cost around $6,000 to $28,000 for 3.5 to 5 years for bachelor of arts, engineering, accounting, and computer science programs in both public and private institutions. Moreover, a Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery, which lasts for five years costs more and may fall around $137,500 to $160,300.

Postgraduate tuition fees may cost around $598 to $4,785 a year, be it public or private institutions.

Cost of Living

Malaysia, as a study destination, also prides itself on its affordable cost of living. In fact, its capital city of Kuala Lumpur was hailed as one of the most affordable cities for students. In 2017, it ranked first, and in 2018, it ranked second.

Aside from tuition fees, students must take into consideration other basic necessities, such as food, transportation, and accommodation. Below is a breakdown of basic necessities and other common expenses that students may have to pay for while studying in Malaysia.

Food (in a restaurant) USD 2.42
Transportation (1-way ticket for local transportation) USD 0.73
Taxi (1 km, local tariff) USD 0.48
Utilities USD 46.12
Internet USD 30.54
Movies  USD 3.63
Accommodation (1 bedroom apartment) USD 213.17–339.95
Health Insurance USD 250 (annually)

Financial Assistance and Working Part-time and Discounts

Although Malaysia offers affordable education, some students may still need assistance to support their education. The Malaysian government, non-government organizations, and even institutions offer various financial assistance, including scholarships and sponsorships, that international students can access.

International students can also take on part-time jobs to supplement their living and tuition fee costs while studying. Moreover, international students in Malaysia are also eligible for various discounts including accommodation, traveling, and restaurants as long as they have an international student identity card (ISIC), which is a valid student ID.
