Safety Tips for International Students 1

Safety Tips for International Students

Studying abroad brings students different kinds of fun. There’s an opportunity to explore and discover the beauty of the host country.

However, the high levels of excitement can also be dangerous. Oftentimes, international students forget to remain vigilant of their surroundings.

Students must know safety tips while studying abroad. No matter how simple these tips may be, they could make the difference between safety and danger.

If you’re studying abroad, it’s crucial to stay safe. Here are some safety tips to follow:

Stay Alert at All Times

Studying abroad means you’ll have to stay in unfamiliar territory. You don’t know how people usually behave or act around in public.

It’s vital to remain vigilant, especially while you’re outside. If you see someone suspicious, trust your instinct and stay as far as possible. This is one of those instances where you have to rely on your gut feeling.

Keep Valuable Belongings Close

As much as possible, leave valuables at your dorm or flat. If you have to bring some with you, make sure they’re close to you.

Avoid putting your phone and wallet in your back pockets. It’s better to bring a sling bag or backpack when traveling.

If it’s not too discomforting, try to place your backpack to your front. That way, you have better control and view of your bag.

Refrain From Traveling Alone at Night

Petty and violent crimes tend to happen at night. As the daylight goes, those with ill intentions come out.

If you have a friend, request them to accompany you if you have evening errands. But, if possible, make sure to finish everything in the morning or afternoon.

Maintain a Low Profile

Avoid being too flashy by wearing extravagant clothes and jewelry. This will prevent you from being a hot target of criminals.

Wear clothes that ordinary locals wear. You can still be fashionable, but avoid getting too much attention.

Listen to Daily News

The best way to stay updated about current affairs is to listen to the news. Make sure that you’re up-to-date with what’s happening in your host country.

Learn Different Emergency Numbers of Your Host Country

As part of your pre-departure arrangement, you must search emergency numbers. Find the contact details in local police stations, ambulatory services, fire departments, etc.

Also, don’t forget to get your friends’ contacts and give them yours. You need to be able to reach each other during emergencies.

Check the Weather

Safety must include security against natural disasters. If the weather’s too hot, apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water. If it’s too cold, bring a thermal jacket.

Don’t forget to check the weather regularly before heading outside.

Be Responsible When Having Fun

Whether you’re at a party or a small gathering, it’s best to remain responsible. Drink wisely and refuse to give your contact to strangers.

If you’re with friends, stay with them at all times. Make sure to bring a couple of medicines too in case of emergency.
