RGU Launches New Post-Graduate Program Innovating Sustainable homes

As part of Robert Gordon University‘s (RGU) successful membership in the UK Green Building Council, a new post-graduate program aimed at increasing building energy efficiency has been approved.

The PG Cert Building Retrofit program was created to help decarbonize and provide a net-zero carbon future by improving the energy performance of existing building stock.

Key Takeaways:

  • The PG Cert Building Retrofit program, a new post-graduate program aimed at improving building energy efficiency, has been launched at RGU.
  • By increasing the energy performance of existing building assets, the PG Cert Building Retrofit initiative aims to assist in decarbonizing and provide a net-zero carbon future.
  • Beginning in September, full-time and part-time students will be able to enroll in the PG Cert Building Retrofit program online, with another intake in January.

The Scott Sutherland School’s new post-graduate program in Building Retrofit joins a portfolio of courses that have sustainability at their core. The program is divided into two sections: a theoretical section and a simulated practical section in which industry is involved in the delivery.

The PG Cert Building Retrofit program will be available online to full-time and part-time students beginning in September of this year, with another intake in January.

RGU students will gain the specialized knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively in this industry in the UK and contribute significantly to the net-zero goal.

The Scottish Government’s goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045, with gas boilers no longer being installed in new homes after 2024. Currently, the way homes are heated accounts for roughly 13% of Scotland’s carbon emissions.

The Scott School of Architecture & Building has been recognized as a member of the UK Green Building Council, putting it at the forefront of sustainable design.

RGU’s accreditation recognizes the school’s track record of enhancing the built environment’s sustainability by changing how it is planned, designed, built, maintained, and operated.

According to program leader Amar Bennadji of The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment, there is no more important issue than improving existing housing stock and upgrading or retrofitting old houses with energy improvements.

RGU is also working on the inter-regional project “Stronghouse,” a €7 million initiative with 26 other EU partners to design a program to assist homeowners with home retrofitting.
