International Students in Prague Stand Out With COVID-19 Innovation Solutions

The COVID-19 pandemic may have taken a toll on most people’s lives, but on the bright side, it has created practical opportunities and solutions for international students, according to Study in Prague.

There were more foreign enrollments than last year by 8% as compared to Erasmus students. 17% of the total number of students consist of international students. They target English-taught degree programs in the country even during the ongoing pandemic.

According to Andrea Petránková of Prague University of Economics and Business, Most universities in Prague are still accepting students, and a rise in Asian and Latin American students.

Study in Prague is an initiative that is composed of the country’s top academic institutions and helps find the best academic program for students. These are Charles University, Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Prague University of Economics and Business, University of Chemistry and Technology Prague, Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

This initiative also helps international students adjust and adapt to the new hybrid learning environment, as well as create solutions to the ongoing pandemic. One top institution, the Czech University of Life Sciences, created a protective mask with a 3D print that can disinfect on its own. Another innovation was launching the AGROPRACE portal to assist the food and agricultural sector with lost jobs.

Students from Czech Technical University also created the CoroVent, which is an open-source lung ventilator, as well as a 3D printed CIIRC RP95 respirator. Moreover, 30,000 full-face masks were developed for physicians in the healthcare systems.

The students of the Center for Artificial Intelligence of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University launched the FreMEn contra COVID project. They made the Nebojsa application that signals people when to avoid long queues or when public areas are very crowded.

With regards to anti-COVID disinfection, the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering had the students produce over 110,000 litres to be used in public organizations.

“Prague is a student-friendly city, local universities are distinguished and internationally recognised. The university study programs in English are high quality, but in comparison with other European countries they are also affordable,” said Hana Šťastná, Public Relations Head at the Academy of Performing Arts.

The country is open for more international enrollees and its world-renowned universities follow strict health protocols amidst the pandemic. There will still be online lectures, as well as ongoing blended learning for everyone.
