An anonymous donor has pledged to fund a scholarship that would grant full-ride scholarships to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) students studying science, technology, engineering, or math at the University of Windsor.
Five students will acquire an undergraduate degree at UWindsor because of the LC Memorial Award for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students in STEM.
The CA$500,000 contribution will offer qualified students up to CA$20,000 each year to cover tuition, housing, and a meal plan, if necessary.
Glen Gwiingos Hare, Ontario Regional Chief, said that this award will change the lives of five fortunate students and impact First Nation communities in Ontario in innumerable ways.
This opportunity, according to Kat Pasquach, Aboriginal outreach and retention coordinator at UWindsor, is a game-changer and many students will benefit from this scholarship.
This grant will directly support the Faculty of Science and will pave the door for FNMI students to pursue science and engineering at UWindsor, Chris Houser, Dean of Science, said.
This new pathway complements current science programs to identify and include Indigenous knowledge into the curriculum, as well as providing space for knowledge keepers and support for indigenous students.
