With all these fascinating offerings, you may dream of studying in St. Petersburg. This is why we’re giving you a guide on what to expect in the student life and culture in the city.
Read on to discover the fun (and challenges) that await you in St. Petersburg:
Climate and Weather in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg experiences the delight of four seasons. In summer, the city enjoys a temperate climate, perfect for a stroll along the city square.
But be prepared during the winter seasons though, because it tends to be extremely cold and snowy. From December to February, the temperature can drop to a low -6°C.
On average days, the temperature can range between 20ºC and 25ºC. It’s just the right weather to enjoy a day out without needing a jacket.
Public Transportation in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg has an efficient mass transit system that can bring you to other Russian cities. If you ride the metro, it will only take 50 minutes before you get to the next city.
If you want to ride the subway network, you can easily locate them because the signs have English translations. If you want to take a bus, you must know at least basic Russian places because signs and announcements are mostly in Russian.
Culture and Historical Attractions
When Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703, he wanted it to be the “window to the West”. And he succeeded in his quest because the city now enjoys a vibrant cultural life.
If you take a look at the buildings, you might recognize bits of Italian architecture. The entire atmosphere is also unlike any other city in Russia and feels a lot more like a walk in Venice.
Unlike Moscow, St. Petersburg has people who speak various foreign languages. This is, of course, because Peter the Great invited the Germans, Italians, Englishmen, Greeks, and more to live in the city.
Recreational Activities
The neon-soaked nights of St. Petersburg’s busiest districts are one to look out for. It’s home to many bars and clubs where mini-concerts are often held for a small indoor party.
Even the days aren’t short on the fun factor in this city. You can stroll along business zones or sit at a cafe to enjoy some refreshments. Still, while having fun, keep note of your safety and don’t easily trust people.Â
